Preventing Damage To Your Roof From Ice And Snow

Churches around the region are becoming very aware of how rain, ice, and snow can damage roofs.  Winter weather is the third-largest cause of catastrophe losses in the United States, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Roof damage, and even collapse, can be a major liability and property issue for all churches. Commercial property insurance will cover many kinds of roof damage, but don’t wait until you have a claim. It is better to do a little prevention.

  • Make sure you inspect your roof on a regular basis.
  • If there is ice or snow build up, have it removed.
  • If the local news starts airing segments on severe weather, you may want to take preventive measures.
  • Make sure your roof is sealed before the rain comes.
  • Inspect the attic to determine if additional support is needed.
  • Know what your roof can hold. Some roofs are only able to withstand 20-40 pounds per square foot.
  • Develop a roof management program to include record keeping, inspections, repair, preventive maintenance, and insurance.

The roof, for the most part, is out of sight and out of mind. Ignoring the roof often leads to premature roof failure, which means water can invade the building and wreak havoc with people, equipment, and productivity. Clearly, regular preventive roofing maintenance should be a major priority for building owners and facilities managers.
